The 2006 Tico Travel Surfing Jr Pro/Am went off to a great start. Friday was the beginning of our 10 day week which had the biggest swell of the year arrive with us. Overhead sets bombing all spots where on fire. It was too big behind the host hotel Jaco Beach Best Western for the free surfing so most ventured off to other rideable spots such as Escondido, Hermosa and Agujas and the Island all which were at their best.
Shea Lopez and Peter Mendia were doing tow-ins on the outer reefs on some triple overhead faces.

Everyone had five days to warm up before for the contest which started on Thursday. We also went on an offshore fishing trip on one of the Pangas. We caught 15 Mahi Mahi in 4 hours and brought them back to the hotel, Roray wife Ui cooked up the fish for the entire crew. The swell dropped as the contest drew closer but the conditions and form got much better. By the time the swell came for the contest we had perfect chest to overhead peaks. Mother nature provided us with some of the most perfect waves for a contest. Everyone was stoked! We had the top  some of the top pro/am surfers in Costa Rica plus surfers from Brazil, California and the East Coast to make up a field of over 36 just for the first round of the Jr Pro division. The were also a large amount of participants in the Amateur Long and Shortboard divisions

Fishing Report

fishing-charter.jpg

Major bite on the Pacific Coast has moved north in the past week,
Until this past week, peak fishing had been south of there, out of Quepos and even further south in the Golfito region,

Kitty Cat skipper Rob Gordon at Carrillo said boats fishing just south of there are getting from 15 to over 20 shots at sailfish and one to three marlin every day. Early this week, he raised a 300-pound marlin that swallowed the teaser and then broke off.

At Barra Colorado on the Caribbean Coast, Río Colorado Lodge reports tarpon fishing has continued steady for the past two weeks, with action in the river mouth and along the rip line, with a monster 170-pounder caught Monday by Rod Douglas, from Kenai, Alaska, the largest we have heard of in a long time.

Here’s what the Costa Rica Surfing guru Michael Parise had to say about CRTRE in his latest 6.0 edition:

One of the best is Mike Brooks’ Costa Rica Travel and Real Estate or toll free 866-502-3883. “CRTRE” is a full-service travel agency that offers discounted airfare, hotels, condo and house rentals, 4×4s, fishing, adventure tours, surf camps—the whole deal. What sets them apart are service and knowledge. Mike lives in Costa Rica half the year, and has vacation hosts there year ’round offering what he calls a “free concierge service” where they’ll book hotels, surf camps, rental cars, private transfers and adventure tours at no additional service charge to his clients. They’ll also give info on good restaurants and of course, surf breaks. It’s all a local phone call away. Mike Brooks is a long-time surfer who has been in the business of sending people to Costa Rica for years and has also run surf camps and resorts there. I’ve been booking through Mike for awhile now and have never been let down—great prices and smooth sailing every time.

The Bridge News

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Their is news of a new bridge being built that will make the drive to Tamarindo about 45 mins less when coming up the Pacific Coast. So now I’ll be able to leave Jaco Beach and get to some big surf quicker when the swell rolls thorugh.
